Sundaland is an original artistic and educational concept developed specifically for PASIC 2026. The name Sundaland refers to the Land of Sunda in West Java Province, Indonesia, which consists of 27 regencies and municipalities, each with its own distinctive rhythmic traditions, musical identities, and performance practices. The project draws inspiration from this rich cultural landscape, viewing rhythm as a central element that connects music, movement, and vocal expression.

The Sundaland Percussion Clinic explores how traditional Indonesian rhythmic concepts, shaped by oral tradition, communal performance, and cultural function, can be respectfully reinterpreted within modern Western percussion and drum set contexts. In Sundanese traditions, percussion often functions in close relationship with dance and vocal elements, and the clinic highlights how rhythmic structures can interact with movement and singing as an integrated performance form. Rather than presenting tradition as a fixed historical artifact, the clinic emphasizes creative translation, transformation, and dialogue between traditional practices and contemporary performance.

Participants will experience an overview of the Sundaland concept, demonstrations of selected traditional rhythmic patterns, and practical examples of adapting these materials for modern percussion instruments and drum set. The clinic will also discuss how percussion can be combined with dance and vocal elements in contemporary settings, alongside considerations of artistic process, cross-cultural collaboration, and ethical responsibility. Musical excerpts will support the presentation, illustrating the evolving language of Sundaland.
