Wakeland Percussion is a nationally and internationally recognized music program based in Frisco, TX, with a record of competitive achievement and artistic ambition that spans the full range of the percussion world. The Wakeland Drumline competes as part of the award-winning Wakeland Marching Band, which has been a consistent class champion at Bands of America regional competitions, including the 2019, 2021, and 2022 North Texas Regional Championships, and earned the 2022 overall North Texas Regional Championship sweeping all caption awards. The program has also claimed multiple UIL 5A Area B Championships and UIL 5A State Bronze medals in 2019, 2023, and 2025. The drumline also competes as a standalone ensemble at North Texas Drumline Competitions, earning SubSection Caption Titles and Champion Titles throughout its history. The concert and jazz percussion students perform with the Wakeland Concert Bands, including an appearance with the Wakeland Wind Symphony at the 75th Annual Midwest Clinic and Convention in Chicago, IL. The Wakeland Percussion Ensemble has established itself among the most decorated high school percussion programs in the country. The ensemble performed at the 75th Annual Midwest Clinic and Convention in Chicago, IL (2021), and at PASIC 2022 in Indianapolis, where they won the International Percussion Ensemble Competition (IPEC), earning the right to perform a featured showcase concert at the convention. In 2024, the ensemble won first place at the PASIC Concert Chamber Percussion Ensemble Competition (CCPEC). The ensemble has also claimed the TCU Percussion Festival championship (2024), earned 2nd-place finishes twice at the Black Swamp Percussion Solo and Ensemble Showcase, and has been recognized as a national winner in the Mark of Excellence National Wind Band and Percussion Ensemble competition. The program has received the John Philip Sousa Foundation Sudler Shield. The program has a sustained commitment to new music, commissioning original works from Ivan Trevino, Austin Keck, Clif Walker, Adam Bruce, Justin Shelton, Doug Bush, Patricia Islas, and Clayton Stroup, and has performed alongside world-renowned artists including She-e Wu, Dan Moore, and Nathan Daughtrey. Students have also studied in masterclasses with leading percussion educators: Dr. John Parks IV, Dr. Brian Zator, Dr. Dave Hall, Mr. Andrew Markworth, Dr. Brian West, Dr. Andrew Eldridge, Mr. Jeff Ausdemore, and Mr. Zach Scheer. Membership is open to high school students in grades 9-12 who have completed at least one year of percussion study at the middle school level. Individual and ensemble competitors in the program have performed at PASIC, the Great Plains International Marimba Competition, the Black Swamp Percussion Solo and Ensemble Showcase, the Texas Music Educators Association Convention, the TCU Percussion Festival, the North Texas Percussion Festival, and the Texas PAS Keyboard Competition. Wakeland Percussion graduates go on to march with college bands, tour with Drum Corps International, perform with university ensembles and orchestras, play in community jazz groups, attend summer music festivals, and compose across a wide range of media. Regardless of the path they choose, they carry a lasting commitment to the fine arts.
