Musique de gestes by Thierry De Mey
Session Description:
Thierry De Mey's approach to movement and sound has shaped contemporary percussion repertoire through "Musique de Tables" (1987), which has become a cornerstone of the percussion ensemble canon. While "Musique de Tables" explores the musicality of table-top gestures and synchronized movement, "Musique de gestes" (2011) takes these concepts further by removing sound production, creating a purely visual choreography that challenges audiences to hear with their eyes.
This newer work serves as both complement and evolution to De Mey's earlier compositions. Where "Musique de Tables" creates music through performers' interaction with surfaces, and "Light Music" (2004) explores the intersection of gesture, light, and sound through interactive technology, "Musique de gestes" asks performers to craft musical narratives purely through movement, demonstrating how De Mey's artistic vision has expanded over time. The piece creates a unique theatrical experience where gestures are divorced from sound production, making the audience's imagination an active participant.
