Two is Better Than One: Repertoire That Uses Two Timpanists
Session Description:
We will take a deep dive into the monumental orchestral works that require two timpanists. I will be joined by Leo Soto, Principal Timpanist of the Houston Symphony.
We will explore the various ways in which the 2nd Timpanist should match the Principal. We will discuss mallet choices, stickings, character, stroke type, and visual communication between the two players. Repertoire will be played from the following pieces:
– Berlioz, Symphonie Fantastique
– Mahler, Symphony No. 2
– Holst, The Planets
– Neilsen, Symphony No. 4
– Orff, Carmina Burana
– Wagner, Funeral Music from Die Gotterdammerung
Leo and I will use Adams timpani for this clinic.
