Lenny Kumar

“Tassa” drumming of Trinidad & Tobago is a type of percussion brought from India by the indentured laborers in the 19th century. “Ustad” Lenny Kumar is a 5th generation drummer carrying on the tradition for over 50 years. Lenny is the band leader of “NGC Trinidad & Tobago Sweet Tassa International”, which is an organization compromising of a Senior Band (Trinidad), all female band (Trinidad), Junior Academy (Trinidad) and a senior band in the U.S. State of Florida. Sweet Tassa is no stranger to PASIC, as we have attended and participated in PASIC 2011 and 2013 with performances and clinics. It is fair to say that Lenny Kumar with his vast working and educational knowledge, is the only tassa drummer that has taken this artform to greater heights. He has traveled the US and the world showcasing and educating many on this musical artform.
Rhythms from India to the Caribbean

Session Description:

For the “clinic” portion, we would like to discuss the background, instruments and technique of our percussion ensemble. For the performance, each rhythm or beat played is what we called a “hand”, and we anticipate playing a minimum of 5 hands during the performance.
