Back to BackBeat
Back to BackBeat is an intense, innovative drum duo formed by elite international touring drummers Giulliana Merello (Argentina) and Helen De La Rosa (Dominican Republic). The powerhouse pair first crossed paths in 2020 while separately playing stadiums and arenas across the globe—Merello on tour with Karol G and De La Rosa with Alejandro Sanz. Bonded by a deep personal friendship and an undeniable musical synergy, they began drumming together for fun, quickly recognizing a rare, synchronized connection. Moving completely away from the traditional, competitive concept of drum battles, they envisioned a project centered on collaborative rhythmic leadership. In 2022, Back to BackBeat was officially born. The duo features a unique staging setup where Merello and De La Rosa perform literally back-to-back. This physical layout demands profound listening, forcing each drummer to focus entirely on the other’s sonic nuances, dynamics, and timekeeping without relying on eye contact. Managing the duo around demanding global touring schedules required maximum dedication. They carved out rehearsals a few days at a time, meeting up in various countries whenever their itineraries aligned. Their hard work culminated in a successful debut live concert in Córdoba, Spain, in 2023, followed by well-received performances in Valencia and Barcelona. By 2024, the duo secured official support from Gretsch Drums for an expansive European tour covering Poland, Italy, Austria, Spain and Germany. Throughout their journey, Back to BackBeat continues to push boundaries and develop their core philosophy: positioning the drum kit as the ultimate protagonist on stage, where rhythm doesn’t just accompany, it leads.

Back to BackBeat: Drum Duo Rhythmic Experience

Live

The drum kit is often relegated to a supportive role, but it is fully capable of leading an entire performance. Back to BackBeat, an intense drum duo formed by Giulliana Merello and Helen De la Rosa, upends traditional staging by placing rhythm at the absolute command center of the musical experience.

The duo achieves this command by sitting back to back on stage, creating a powerful layout that redefines live performance dynamics. Facing away from each other, they lead a complex narrative purely through a conversational exchange of complementing rhythms, interlocking textures, and shared dynamics, moving entirely past competitive drum battles.

Drawing from their original repertoire of electronic, rock, funk, Latin music, and contemporary groove, Merello and De la Rosa share their frameworks for establishing the drum kit as a primary voice.
