Offering “a tone so pure it is almost a sine wave” (The Wire), Adam Lion is a percussionist concerned with improvisation, composition, and performance. Based in Los Angeles, his work has been featured in The New York Times, Pitchfork, Artforum, and Bandcamp Daily. In 2025, Lion performed over 40 concerts in 21 states, traveling to all regions of the contiguous United States. His current practice explores frameworks involving agency, perception, immediacy, and constraint. As a composer-improviser, Lion focuses on larger philosophical concepts like the creation of structure through chance, cohesion through independence, and the borderlands between the raw materiality of sound and human cognition. Within this space is the gray zone between composition and improvisation, which is a core part of his research. Lion incorporates these concepts to create performances that invigorate space, pushing audiences to reconsider how they relate to the world around them.
