ClinicVirtual

The role of the timpanist is paramount to any orchestra or band, and the roll is at the heart of that impact. From tranquil textures to thunderous climaxes, rolls can shape the color and energy of the ensemble. In this dynamic session, award-winning timpanist Alana Wiesing dives deep into what truly defines a great roll and why it matters.

Attendees will learn effective strategies for practicing and performing rolls across a range of drums, dynamics, and musical contexts. The session will address mallet selection for optimal sound quality, physical and musical considerations that affect consistency and clarity, and common challenges timpanists face at every level. Through guided discussion and focused repertoire excerpts, attendees will discover how thoughtful roll choices elevate both musical expression and ensemble impact.

By reframing the roll as a powerful expressive tool and not just a technical requirement, this session empowers timpanists to strengthen their artistic voice and fully embrace their role as musical leaders within an ensemble.
