Mr. Duff’s Visits with Schrödinger’s Cat and the Complementary Degenerate
Cloyd Duff’s Clearing Process is widely used, yet the logic behind his “channels” is often treated as tradition rather than mechanism. This Scholarly Research Lightning Round presents a musician-centered acoustics model that makes Duff’s primary and secondary channels concrete: they are a practical way of finding and restoring symmetry between complementary degenerates. In physics terms, the timpani’s pitch-supporting behavior includes double degeneracy, where the same modal behavior can occur in two rotated orientations. When symmetry is high, those partners remain unified and reinforce a stable pitch center; when symmetry is compromised, they separate and the ear hears blur, beating, and “false clears.”
Using clear visuals (simple mode diagrams plus before-and-after spectrogram/FFT snapshots) and an optional brief timpani demonstration, this talk connects Duff’s listening sequence to what changes acoustically when a drum truly “locks.” Content is drawn from the WEBook Mr. Duff's Visits with Schrödinger's Cat and The Complementary Degenerate hosted on The Quantum World of Timpani Pitch: Listening for Order in Chaos (https://quantum.pauken.org/).
