Performance Profiling for Percussionists: Adapting Sports Psychology Tools for University Percussion Studios

Percussion Pedagogy
Presentations on Percussion PedagogyShared

This session explores how assessment tools from coaching and sports psychology can be adapted for use in university percussion studios. Drawing on performance profiling models from athlete development, the presentation demonstrates how instructors can implement a structured, repeatable self-assessment process at the start of a semester or academic year, with periodic check-ins to monitor progress. Performance profiling enables individuals to identify their core values, recognize their strengths, discover their natural aptitudes, and uncover areas for targeted improvement. Through this reflective process, students and instructors can collaboratively develop strategies to enhance mindset, cultivate performer identity, and build a strong studio culture. Performance profiling provides a shared framework for reflection, goal-setting, and constructive dialogue between the instructor and the student.

Attendees will gain practical strategies for integrating performance profiling into applied lessons and studio classes. The process also establishes an environment in which both students and instructors recognize that learning is continuous—students understand that effective teaching requires ongoing development, and instructors gain insight into what their students value. By creating a space for open discussion, performance profiling facilitates mutual understanding and collaboration, allowing students and teachers to learn from one another while supporting a shared sense of purpose and professional growth within the studio.
