Key to Successful Audition: Unique Sound as a Core Skill of Each Orchestral Percussionist

ClinicLive

At the beginning of this clinic, I would like to briefly introduce my professional background, including the institutions I work with and the specific characteristics of the orchestras in which I regularly perform. This context is essential for understanding my approach to orchestral playing and sound production.

In reference to the mock audition from last year, and considering how crucial a conscious approach to sound and the development of an individual sonic identity are—particularly in the context of blind auditions—I would like to focus on the topic of sound awareness within the percussion section. Together with colleagues from different parts of the world, I will present an excerpt from Igor Stravinsky’s The Firebird.

We will perform this excerpt four times as a full section, rotating positions so that each participant has the opportunity to play every part. This will allow each performer to demonstrate their personal approach to a specific instrument, methods of sound production, articulation, and sensitivity to color and balance within the section.

Through this practical demonstration, participants will be able to observe how even the smallest details—such as the role of seemingly minor instruments like the triangle—can significantly influence the overall sound of the section. The clinic will also highlight how just a few strokes on the bass drum can shape orchestral texture, projection, and blend, emphasizing the importance of responsibility and awareness at every position within the percussion section.
