Vadim Karpinos Assistant Principal Timpani and Percussion Chicago Symphony Orchestra

From Solo to the Symphony- Connecting Solos, Excerpts and a Concerto

Symphonic
ClinicLive

During the first part of my class, I will be presenting a brand-new piece
by Joseph Tompkins: Waltz For Karpinos. I will be demonstrating applied
percussion techniques and extended percussion techniques. I will expand this
piece to tambourine, and we will connect everything to the orchestral excerpts
including Dvorak Carnival overture on tambourine and Kodaly Hary Janos on xylophone.

For the second half of the class, I will be demonstrating and presenting a double concerto by Timothy Corpus entitled Great Lakes which was recently performed with the Chicago Symphony conducted by legendary Maestra Marin Alsop. The piece features cadenzas that include an original four row xylophone. Please join me as we explore technical and musical challenges with the goal of presenting them in an exciting interesting and organic way.
