Sleep for Optimal Performance: Balance, Anxiety, Stress, Rest, and Solutions
Dr. Milanak will present a clinic openly discussing the issues that many of us face from poor sleep and rest 'hygiene.' Dr. Coley will moderate the session, bringing his direct experience with almost 20 years of sleep issues, and a more recent recalculation of professional health habits following a bout with anxiety, debilitating neck pain, and headaches.
As busy professionals, most of us have less-than-ideal sleep habits. Performance and tour schedules, teaching demands, gathering together a portfolio career to meet financial needs, and the long hours needed to plan and practice so we can participate in our dream work. This can be a detrimental spiral, especially if we're dealing with injury and fatigue in our hands, wrists, and arms. Sleep, rest, and exercise are the solutions to healing from injury, anxiety, stress overload/burnout, but oftentimes we use other coping vices that actually exacerbate the issues in the longterm and just keep pushing through, trying not to be perceived as weak or uncommitted.
We will bring on guests to discuss and present a variety of experiences across sleep problems, as well as anxiety-performance anxiety and all things related-such as gigging enough to pay bills, and balancing the personal and professional lives. Dr. Coley and guests will present specific areas that plague performers, and Dr. Milanak will help to debunk myths, explain what is really happening, and provide real applications for remedying the issues. Sleep paralysis or panic attacks will be discussed as well. We will seek to take the stigma out of having an injury, time restraints, burnout, and more.
Optimizing your sleep and rest is the key to optimizing your performance in the field. The issues discussed in this session are things that we should pay attention to, but we often do not, due to the grind of our careers and how we're conditioned to constantly push on.
