In modern live performance, drummers are no longer just timekeepers—they are musical directors, system integrators, and improvisers within high-tech productions. In this clinic, I will demonstrate how drummers can design and perform interactive audio systems that are musically expressive, structurally flexible, and capable of leading a production, drawing from my experience performing with Cirque du Soleil.

Attendees will explore strategies for building a “living and breathing” soundtrack, where audio adapts to performers’ timing, theatrical cues, and evolving musical intensity. Using Ableton Live as a performance engine, I will break down scene structuring, follow actions, dummy clips, and hybrid tempo control, showing how drummers can act as both performer and interactive conductor of the show. We will also cover how to lead other musicians and performers in real time, manage cues, and maintain musical cohesion—skills essential for drummers who want to function as bandleaders or musical directors.

The clinic will highlight practical lessons from large-scale productions: designing systems that are reliable under pressure, musically adaptable, and performer-friendly, as well as rehearsal strategies, troubleshooting, and balancing artistic vision with technical demands. While rooted in theatrical and show production, these approaches are widely applicable to bands, theater, dance, and touring acts, giving drummers tools to expand their creative and leadership impact beyond traditional roles.

By the end of the session, attendees will understand how to integrate interactive audio, technology, and leadership to create dynamic, responsive performances—positioning the drummer as a central driver of musical flexibility, expressive power, and overall show direction.
