a Piece for a Middle Airplane Seat (2019)

Session Description:

Jessie Marino is a Berlin-based composer, performer, and media artist. Her compositions and solo performances abstract ideas drawn from all stripes of popular culture and political discourse, girded by a definitively humanistic sensibility rife with equal doses of wit and pathos. Marino’s pieces score out sound, video, story, lighting, and staging, treating each of these elements as expandable musical materials. She transcends the conventional materials of composition to help audiences locate music in the most commonplace activities and relations. jessiemarino.com

a Piece for a Middle Airplane Seat (2019) was originally written for and premiered by line upon line percussion. The score consists of a set of instructions for creating an original physical choreography, which is then structured by the composer with some specifications regarding repetitions of the gestures and timings. From the composer, “A piece of musical choreography that you can perform during the quiet hours of a red-eye flight… all from the position of the middle seat of the exit row.”
