“I Delayed People’s Flights by Walking Slowly in Narrow Hallways” by Mayke Nas & Wouter Snoei

Session Description:

This session features an excerpt from the seldom performed work "I Delayed People's Flights by Walking Slowly in Narrow Hallways" by Mayke Nas and Wouter Snoei. A quartet for amplified chalkboards, with live electronics, the piece utilizes movement throughout the performance. There is practical usage of movement through traversing the stage to approach or leave the chalkboards from on- stage chairs. Gestures that are ancillary to sound production are silent but visible to the audience, introducing another element for them to witness. Other gestures are tied directly to the production of sound, such as manipulating the chairs for rhythms. Or, as the major center piece of the work, the movements required to write in rhythm on the chalkboards. The writing on the boards introduces a theatrical and visual experience for the audience, with the narrative being crafted before their eyes that can be read, as well as listened to.
