KöNG Duo
Originally from Hong Kong, KöNG Duo (Bevis Ng and Hoi Tong Keung) is a Toronto-based percussion duo specializing in contemporary classical music. They curate performances that aim to broaden audiences’ perceptions of percussion chamber music, programming under-performed works and collaborating with emerging composers to explore new possibilities through instrumentation and multimedia.
KöNG Duo curates performances that reflect contemporary life, including the 2022 multimedia performance “good morning, hong kong” at the Banff Centre and “Percussion Music from Everyday Life,” presented at Music TORONTO in 2023.
KöNG Duo recently won first prize at the Southern California Marimba 2023 International Artist Competition and was named Young Artistic Associates for Confluence Concerts’ 2023–2024 season. In December 2023, they premiered “Dreams of Home” as part of the program. The Duo proudly endorses Marimba One instruments.
To play or not to play: Interdependent Movements in Percussion Duets
Session Description:
KöNG Duo will perform “Black and White” by Fish Yu and “Gone, Dog. Gone!” by Mark Applebaum. We will explore the interdependence of a percussion duo by showcasing various forms of synchronicity between performers. Yu’s piece showcases how crucial the movements are to sound production, while Applebaum’s piece explores the concept of rhythmic miming, visually conveying the music.
“Black and White” is a movement from “Frolic” (2023–2024). We commissioned Yu to create a piece that represents our shared identity as Hong Kongers. “Frolic” reimagines games we played in Hong Kong in the form of music. This movement explores a popular clapping game amongst children in Hong Kong, which shares the movement’s name.
In contrast, Applebaum’s “Gone, Dog. Gone!” (2012) juxtaposes one performer’s movements with the another’s percussion playing. The performers in “Gone, Dog. Gone!” are asked to perform gestures in precise rhythm, synchronizing between each other’s movement and/or percussion playing.
