A Practical Guide to Developing Your Composition Technique

Session Description:

In this session for composers of any experience level, Dr. Jamie Wind Whitmarsh will go through a variety of composition techniques, tips, and tricks that aid composers in their process. The topics covered are: – Philosophies and mindsets – how to approach composing in a way that frees you to create your music (and not someone else’s) – Live sketching – creating material from nothing, avoiding “blank page syndrome” – Material sheets and formal diagrams – techniques to help organizing material and balancing musical form – Developing musical material – how to take a musical idea and give yourself options, how to refine material to be most effective, taking the “elements of music” and applying them to a theme to demonstrate the elasticity inherent in all musical material – A loose curriculum to guide attendees well after PASIC is over.
