M’Boom Tribute Ensemble
The M’Boom Tribute Ensemble will feature Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) percussion professors and ‘Boom Alumni coming together to present a concert of music from the American Jazz percussion group “M’Boom” founded by Max Roach in 1970. This M’Boom Tribute Ensemble will feature Joe Chambers (M’Boom original member), Stefon Harris (M’Boom alum) and an ensemble of HBCU percussion educators including Thomas Taylor (NCCU), Dr. Lamon Lawhorn (VSU), Dr. Sean Daniels (ASU), Don Parker (GCSU), Marcia McCants (VSU), Don Johns (BSU), and Malcolm Jackson (CMF). It has been 55 years since Max Roach and M’Boom changed our percussion world, and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate and explore this impact than at PASIC50.

Session Description:
As we embark on the one-hundred-first (101) year of drummer Max Roach’s birth, we will also celebrate the 55th year of the birth of M’Boom. M’Boom was an American Jazz percussion group founded by Max Roach in 1970. All members of the group played an array of percussion instruments during their performances including marimba, timpani, xylophone, vibraphone, gongs, bells, an array of drums from around the world, and the drum set. The word M’boom means “Elders getting together around playing percussion in Democratic Republic of Congo”. HBCU percussion professors and M'Boom Alumni will come together to present a concert of music from the American Jazz percussion group. The tribute performance would consist of 3 to 5 of the original M’boom pieces from the recordings created in the 1970’s and 1980’s featuring M'Boom members Joe Chambers & Stefon Harris. Come celebrate the ensemble and original compositions created from it's original members.
