The Legacy of Rhythm! Discovery Center: A Journey of Vision and Sound
The World’s Foremost Percussion Museum Founded by the Percussive Arts Society (PAS) in 2009, Rhythm! Discovery Center was established as the world’s premier drum and percussion museum. Its mission was to advance the understanding of percussion and its role in world cultures through interactive educational experiences for visitors of all ages. It provided a unique space where the global story of rhythm—shaping communication, music, art, and society—was told through a rich collection of historic artifacts and hands-on instruments.
The Move to Indianapolis (2009) The museum’s physical history began on April 30, 2009, when the PAS offices moved to a permanent location adjacent to the Artsgarden in downtown Indianapolis. While the offices were completed first, the surrounding area remained a construction zone for six months as the museum took shape. This early move allowed the PAS staff to settle in and closely monitor the birth of the exhibits and the modern museum design.
A Vision of Discovery In June 2009, Steve Houghton announced the museum’s name: Rhythm! Discovery Center. The goal was to create a space that went beyond mere “instruments on display.” The vision centered on “discovery”—creating themed galleries where every visitor, whether a percussionist or not, could engage with wonderful stories. It interpreted the role of rhythm in daily life through dynamic educational experiences, interactive exhibits, and participatory learning opportunities.
The Grand Opening and “Old Granddad” The center celebrated its grand opening during PASIC 2009, a magical moment realized through the vision of the Board, the dedication of the PAS staff, and the grassroots efforts of members worldwide.
By PASIC 2010, the museum reached a major historical milestone: the installation of Lou Harrison’s An American Gamelan, affectionately known as “Old Granddad.” This was the culmination of a two-year rescue and restoration project that brought the rare instrument from Santa Cruz to its new home in Indianapolis, securing a vital piece of percussion history for the collection.
A Milestone for the Percussive Arts Society As PAS celebrated its 50th Anniversary, the Rhythm! Discovery Center stood as a testament to the society’s growth since its informal beginning at a 1961 dinner. The consolidation of the PAS headquarters—including its offices, library, and the museum—greatly enhanced the society’s ability to communicate with the world percussion community. As former PAS President Gary Olmstead noted, the center became a vital part of a 50-year legacy that brought a diverse field together to meet, perform, and share the universal language of rhythm.
