Over the past few years, timpani solo literature has expanded, spearheaded by various artists and composers who sense an untapped potential in the melodic capabilities of the instrument; yet, one composer’s work still remains atop the list for solo timpani repertoire: Elliott Carter’s “Eight Pieces for Four Timpani.”
