Writing a duet for the Brazilian pandeiro and Arab riqq has long been an idea in the back of my mind. It’s not often that I’d admit to giving up on an idea, but Jennifer Hotz’s new duet, “Traveling Distances,” for pandeiro and riqq is so well done that I find myself delightfully satisfied that the repertoire for frame drums has expanded with such a talented new voice.
