Inspired by a visit to the island of Nagasaki and “the ambiguous bells of the oldest Western church in Japan”—the Oura Basilica—Daniel Dorff ’s “Three Mysteries of Nagasaki” is a violin and percussion duet in three movements that makes use of largely metallic percussion instruments and percussive violin playing to mimic the “oddly distorted and slowly pealing bells” of the church.
