For those looking for a little hoedown for a younger percussion ensemble, Murray Houllif has obliged in this new work for percussion octet. “Hillbilly Heaven” opens with a swung country “train” groove in the drumset and guiro, adding tambourine and woodblocks before the entrance of alternating chordal downbeats between the keyboard instruments, which increase in rhythmic frequency leading into the first statement of the melody.
