There are many ways to create linear patterns. In his previous books, Joel Rothman started with a cymbal pattern and filled in the spaces with the snare and bass drum (see reviews for Drummin’ in the Rhythm of Rock with Linear Patterns and Linear Jazz Drumming, July 2016 PN).
