Judges
Adam Groh
Adam Groh, a native of St. Louis, Missouri, is a percussionist with a diverse performing and teaching background who is committed to community engagement and amplifying marginalized voices in the music world. He is an ardent supporter of new music, and he has commissioned and premiered dozens of new works for solo and chamber percussion. Adam has performed at the Roulette Intermedium in Brooklyn, NY, the Banff Centre for the Arts in Banff, Canada, Fast Forward Austin, the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, SEAMUS, the International Computer Music Conference, and Electronic Music Midwest. As an orchestral musician, Adam has performed with the Columbus Symphony, North Carolina Symphony, Asheville Symphony, Des Moines Symphony, Brevard Philharmonic, Round Rock Symphony, Victoria Symphony, Tallahassee Symphony, Chautauqua Symphony, and Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestras.
Adam’s playing can be heard on Jason Treuting’s Nine Numbers and the Cage 100: Bootleg Series by So Percussion (both on Cantaloupe Records), as well as multiple releases through Naxos and Garnet House Productions. His original compositions have been published through C. Alan Publications and Bachovich Music Publications.
In addition to his regular teaching duties, Adam has presented clinics at events such as The Midwest Clinic, the Texas, Kansas, Minnesota, and Iowa Music Educators Association Conventions, and multiple PAS-sponsored Days of Percussion.
Adam is currently Assistant Professor of Percussion at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Adam received his Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Percussion Performance at The University of Texas at Austin, his Master’s Degree in Percussion Performance from The Florida State University, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Music from Truman State University. His primary teachers include: Dr. Thomas Burritt, Dr. John W. Parks IV, and Dr. Michael Bump.

Doug Perkins
Doug Perkins is a GRAMMY-nominated percussionist, producer, and conductor hailed as a “percussion virtuoso” by The New York Times. Known for his innovative artistry, Perkins has graced iconic stages such as Carnegie Hall, the Barbican Center, and even the Alaskan Tundra.
A champion of contemporary music, Perkins has commissioned and premiered works by renowned composers including John Luther Adams, Steve Reich, Sofia Gubaidulina, Tristan Perich, and Michael Gordon. He co-founded the groundbreaking ensembles So Percussion and the Meehan/Perkins Duo and frequently performs with Ensemble Signal. Additionally, he is a frequent collaborator with dance and has recently worked with the Limon Dance Company and choreographers, Lucinda Childs, Annie-B Parson, and Pam Tanowitz.
His recordings, featured on esteemed labels such as Nonesuch, Bridge, and Harmonia Mundi, have earned widespread acclaim. Highlights include his production of Adams’ Inuksuit, recognized among 2013’s top recordings by NPR and The New York Times, and Perich’s Drift Multiply, which earned spots on multiple 2020 “Best Of” lists. His recording of Adams’ Sila: The Breath of the World received a 2023 GRAMMY nomination for Best Orchestral Performance.
Perkins specializes in creating immersive outdoor musical events, presenting works like Xenakis’ Persephassa on Central Park Lake and Adams’ compositions from Lincoln Center to the Italian Alps. Alex Ross of The New Yorker praised his production of Inuksuit as “one of the most rapturous listening experiences” of his life. In 2024, Perkins directed the New York premiere of Adams’ Crossing Open Ground at Lincoln Center.
Currently Associate Professor of Percussion and Director of Percussion at the University of Michigan, Perkins previously taught at Dartmouth College and the Boston Conservatory.
