ABOUT Garza von Kampen & The WOU-USF Percussion Group
SESSION TITLE: Performance of “Palindrome” from Mark Applebaum’s “Straitjacket”
Garza von Kampen and the WOU-USF (or “woo-SF”) Percussion Group is a collective comprised of two university percussion studios spanning across both American coasts: Western Oregon University, led by Joel Alberto Garza (Assistant Professor of Percussion), and University of South Florida, led by Kevin von Kampen (Director of Percussion Studies).
Both have collaborated with each other’s programs, Garza completing a residency with the USF Percussion Studio in the Spring of 2022, and von Kampen doing the same with the WOU Percussion Studio in the Spring of 2023. During Garza’s residency in 2022, both a performance and recording of Mark Applebaum’s percussion work Straitjacket was completed at the USF School of Music, with Garza as the featured guest soloist.
For this collaborative effort, both programs will unify, along with Garza and von Kampen, to perform the opening drum set movement (“Palindrome”) of Applebaum’s composition.
