Marimba Improvisation in Flamenco and Jazz Styles
Session Description:
Flamenco’s sophisticated rhythms thrill; spontaneous improvised marimba excites. Steve Mullins, composer/guitar; Doug Walter, marimba; and Carl Dixon, cajòn play Flamenco parties, concerts/clubs internationally. Steve’s flamenco background fuses complex rhythms with Flamenco’s aggression. It’s risky; dynamics & rhythms are edgy, tempos are supposed to rush(!), licks are fast–splinters fly. We’re dancing on the well-edge; any misstep may drown us–i.e., we may miss notes…
Well-timed phrasing gives accuracy; we practice dynamics methodically. This music’s physical; using the entire body balances flexibility/power, expression/endurance, speed/tone. A relaxed, energetic approach works in music so rapid, taxing–LOUD.
Flamenco rhythms shift spontaneously. In 3/4, Flamenco establishes a Compas (rhythmic structure). Then, Falsetas add Contretiempo (syncopated metric shifts). Meter shifts between 3/4, 12/8. Solos are more chordal, emphasizing driving rhythms. Rim of The Well exploits these frenzied rhythms uniquely.
