Gene Fambrough

Gene Fambrough is Assistant Director of Bands and Professor of Percussion at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he has been on the faculty since 2001. He directs the Percussion Ensemble, Steel Band, Drumline, pep band, and oversees the percussion area. He holds degrees from the University of Georgia, East Carolina University, and the University of Alabama.

In 2015, his compilation “Occam’s Razor” was released on compact disc, iTunes, Spotify, and other digital media services. This release features 6 original compositions for a variety of percussion instrumentation. He has performed and presented clinics throughout the southeast, performed in the PASIC All-Star Steel Band, and with artists such as Third Coast Percussion and Steve Vai. He served as an associate editor for Percussive Notes from 2013-21.

Mental Floss – Variations to Improve Your Brain Game

Session Description:

Most musicians freely admit that the majority of mistakes in performance occur because of a lapse in concentration, as opposed to lack of practice. We can develop our technique to the point of perfection, only to have our mind drift unintentionally. This clinic aims to provide a system of “brain games” to help address this issue.

Different from “gridding” (combining elements to improve “chops”), these exercises are meant to be mentally challenging. They are also not notated – the challenge is to “think” your way through the exercise.

This type of teaching has been used for decades, with many students and teachers embracing the benefits of the “mental challenge”. With some thought, teachers can apply this in other settings – drum set, keyboards, etc. – and develop their students to be lifelong learners. I strongly believe in the merits of this system as an additional pedagogical approach in music education.
