Pelham Park Middle School in Pelham, Alabama, successfully launched its first percussion club during the spring semester, meeting on Wednesdays after school. The club was spearheaded by Neal Flum, the director of marching percussion at Pelham High School, and received strong support from head director Joel Henson, assistant director Katie Gotham, and principal Ryan Kendall.
During their sessions, students focused on enhancing their performance skills by practicing essential battery percussion techniques: rudiments, stick control patterns, and rhythm and timing. The club’s inaugural semester concluded on April 23rd with a comprehensive review, a demonstration for parents and directors, and a celebration. Educational resources and door prizes were generously provided by Vic Firth/Zildjian and the Percussive Arts Society (PAS). The event also featured pizza and cookies for everyone.
The students are eagerly anticipating the return of the Pelham Park Middle School Percussion Club in 2026. Special thanks are extended to directors Joel Henson and Katie Gotham, and principal Ryan Kendall, for their invaluable support.
