BLACK SWAMP PERCUSSION
Black Swamp Percussion Announces “Percussion 101,” a Definitive Educational Series for the Modern Percussionist
Black Swamp Percussion is proud to announce the launch of Percussion 101, an expansive new video education series designed to standardize and elevate concert percussion pedagogy. Created as a comprehensive guide for band directors, students, and percussion professionals, the series officially debuts with a launch trailer this Monday, followed by the first full lesson on Friday.
As music programs continue to demand higher levels of technical proficiency, Percussion 101 serves as a bridge between foundational playing and professional-grade performance. The series focuses on the “accessory” instruments that often define the color of an orchestral score but are frequently misunderstood. These instrument lessons are demonstrated on the Overture Series of instruments by Black Swamp Percussion. Overture instruments are a selection of concert percussion instruments designed by percussionists for band and orchestral performance.
“Our goal was to create an indispensable resource that helps simplify the complexities of concert percussion,” said Tim Church (VP, Sales & Marketing) at Black Swamp Percussion. “By focusing on core performance techniques and providing actionable practice tips, we’re giving educators and students the tools they need to build a rock-solid musical foundation.”
A Masterclass Experience for Every Skill Level
The series is hosted by acclaimed Black Swamp Artist and Principal Percussionist for the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, Trevor Barroero, whose meticulous attention to detail and engaging teaching style bring each instrument to life. Each weekly installment includes:
- Instrument Deep Dives: Detailed instruction on sound production, grip, and setup.
- Orchestral Excerpts: Demonstrations featuring iconic works by Tchaikovsky, Mahler, Bizet, and more.
- Downloadable Resources: Written guides and practice room materials to reinforce each lesson.
Series Schedule
The journey begins on Monday, January 5th with the official series premiere video, followed by Lesson 1: Tambourine on Friday, January 9th. New lessons will be released every Friday for five consecutive weeks on the Black Swamp Percussion website and social media channels.

CHICAGO DRUM SHOW
Chicago Drum Show Taps Drumming News Network As Its Official Media Sponsor For 2026
Johnny and Brian Drugan, producers of the Chicago Drum Show, have named the Drumming News Network as the official media sponsor for the 2026 edition of the world-renowned, long-running drumming show. Started by noted drum historian, Rob Cook, in 1991, the show is celebrating its 35th Anniversary this year; taking place at the Kane Country Fairgrounds in St. Charles, Illinois, on May 16th and 17th, 2026.
The Chicago Drum Show, which was the first independent drum expo in the U.S., has long been known as a vintage and custom haven for drum enthusiasts far and wide. However, since being acquired by the Drugan’s in 2025, the show has expanded its focus to serve the needs of the entire drumming community. This year’s show will feature its widest variety of both modern and vintage exhibitors, as well as a slate of clinicians representing many drumming styles.
“We’ve already been in contact with local stores, schools, private teachers and churches. Our collaboration with DNN will support our growth and broaden our reach through additional, international coverage on the community media’s multiple online channels,” says CDS producer, Johnny Drugan.
The combined efforts of the Chicago Drum Show and the Drumming News Network are aimed at continuing to build on the increased drum industry participation and the public support of regional drum shows over the past years.
